Weekly Roster Update 05/03/19

Manny Machado accidentally gave his entire contract to the Braves mascot, Blooper. Jesse Winker waved goodbye to the Mets faithful. CC Sabathia entered the history books (more on him below). All in just one week of baseball! Did we mention we love this sport?

As will be the case every Friday of the 2019 season, we’ve updated all 30 teams rosters. We’ve given significant boosts to this past week’s top performers and changed the lineups to best reflect the ones being put on the field each day by MLB clubs.

Let’s take a look at some of the best performances from this past week:

CC Sabathia

This past Tuesday, CC Sabathia collected his 3,000th strikeout. Only 17 pitchers in the history of MLB have ever recorded that many. Of those 17, only 3 were lefties! To say Sabathia has had a storied career thus far is a bit of an understatement. He’s 10 IP away from throwing over 3,500 innings. He has a career 3.69 ERA with a 20% K rate and a sub 7.5% walk rate. We may not be done talking about Sabathia this year either as he’s just 3 wins away from a career total of 250. We’ve boosted Sabathia’s Curve, Drop and Stamina ratings.

Michael Chavis

The Boston rookie continues to make an impact for the Red Sox. So far on the season, Chavis has slashed .314/.442/.600 with 3 HR and a stolen base to his name. While Chavis’s 28% K rate is a bit elevated, he’s also sporting a 16% BB rate –  that’s 7% above league average. Chavis is also making fantastic contact with the ball with a 17.4% barrel rate and a near 35% Hard Hit rate. The utility infielder isn’t all offense. He’s done a great job defensively all over the infield: a game at 1B, eight at 2B and two 3B. We’ve boosted Chavis’s Contact, Power and Fielding ratings.

Zack Greinke

Since Greinke’s shaky opening day performance, he’s been the ace we all have come to expect him to be. The month of April saw him put up a 2.01 ERA with a 29% K rate, a 4% BB rate and an impeccable .082 WHIP. In each of the 6 starts Greinke made, he limited his opponents to 3 ER or fewer and pitched at least 6 IP. His most recent outing against the Yankees saw him go 7.2 IP with 1 ER, 5 H, 1 BB and 7 K thanks to a fantastic fastball/changeup mix. We’ve boosted Greinke’s Drop and Stamina ratings.

Jose Abreu

The first two weeks of the MLB season were not kind to Jose Abreu – he hit just .200 with an OBP of .262. His past few weeks however have been absolutely dominant. He’s racked up 20 RBI, crushed 3 HR, and cut his K rate down by 10%. He’s slashing .379/.455/.638 bringing his 2019 totals up to .292/.362/.531 with 6 HR and 30 RBI. The HR are certainly to be expected for Abreu but how about the stolen bases? Abreu – not known for his speed – already matched his 2018 total with 2 and is only 1 more stolen base away from tying his career high! We’ve boosted Abreu’s Contact, Power and Speed rating.

Jerad Eickhoff

After dealing with injuries since the 2018 campaign, Jerad Eickhoff is back and ready to dominate. He’s made 3 total appearances so far in the 2019 season and has a 2.12 ERA with a 10.59 K/9. While Eickhoff did get a bit banged up in Coors Field (4 ER there is really 2 ER in any other stadium though, right?) he followed that up by going 7 strong against the Marlins with 0 ER, 2 H, 1 BB and 7 K. Eickhoff will look to continue the success he’s had with his dominant curveball tomorrow night against the Washington Nationals. We’ve boosted Eickhoff’s Curve, Drop, and Stamina ratings.
