Weekly Roster Update 05/04/18
May 04, 2018
Welcome to the R.B.I Baseball May 4th Roster Update; may the 4th be with you! On Fridays throughout the 2018 regular season we’ll put out a roster update for R.B.I 18 that best reflects the state of the game in Major League Baseball. We’ll tune individual players to represent the latest performances. Did Manny Machado mash three taters this week? We’ll be sure to give him a boost in power. Another 10K performance from Chris Sale? We’ll add a bit more movement to that slider. Let’s start off by looking at six week-five players who really made an impact:
Oh my oh Manny! Mr. Miami continues to be as hot as his nickname would suggest. The Orioles shortstop hit .391 this past week with 8 RBI and a stolen base to boot. That puts Machado’s 2018 triple slash at .353/.433/.664 which is good for the second highest batting average in baseball. Manny is also 5th in baseball in WAR at 1.8, and if he continues to hit extra base hits like the one below, that number will only be on the rise. We’ve boosted Manny’s Contact and Speed.
When baseballs go to sleep, they have nightmares about Matt Davidson. The White Sox util infielder/DH continued to mash taters like he was serving up a Thanksgiving feast! He hit four more home runs this past week and recorded a .957 SLG. Davidson’s hard contact on the year is now at 51.7%, good enough for third best in baseball and he’s hitting .500 against sinkers. We’ve boosted Matt Davidson’s Power to all fields as well as his Contact.
El Yo-Yo was certainly walking the dog this past week as he recorded a .514 OBP with a 16% walk-rate. That wasn’t all however as Jorge Soler also hit .419 with two dingers and 7 RBI. The Royals OF now leads his team in batting average and OBP, and is second in ISO. Hard to not believe in his power when he’s hitting three-run dingers over the Green Monster like the one below. We’ve boosted Soler’s Contact and Power to all fields.
The Big Maple went MEGA Maple this week as he went 7 IP with 16 K and just 1BB against the Oakland Athletics. Paxton used his four-seam and cutter to perfection as a whopping 30% of the pitches he threw resulted in a swing and a miss. This is nothing new for the Mariners southpaw though as he currently has a top 10 cutter in all of baseball. We’ve boosted Paxton’s Curve and Drop.
After a shaky start to the 2018 season, Michael Fulmer looks to be right on track as he’s recorded 14 K’s in his last 12 IP while only giving up 2 ER and 3 free passes. The Tigers ace now has a 2.80 ERA and an impressive 45.2% ground-ball rate thanks to a slider that batters are hitting a meager .156 off of. We’ve boosted Fulmer’s Curve.
The Marlins southpaw put on a clinic this week against a potent Rockies offense as he went 7 IP with 0 ER, 1 BB and 9 K. Smith is now sporting a 12.87 K/9 this season which is good enough for 5th best in the league, right behind Max Scherzer. Even more impressive? Smith is generating all these swings and misses with just three pitches: a fastball that can hit 97mph, a change-up with a lot of movement and a slider. We’ve boosted Smith’s Curve and Drop.
