08-21-20 Roster Update
August 21, 2020
Let the kids play! This past week saw some incredible performances from some of the games biggest up and coming stars. Fernando Tatis Jr continued to make an MVP case for himself as he slugged four more HR while Casey Mize and Dane Dunning gave us a preview of what the future of the Tigers and White Sox rotation looks like: really good.
This week’s R.B.I. 20 roster update has you covered as we’ve given significant boosts to this past week’s top performers and changed the lineups to best reflect the ones being put on the field each day by MLB clubs.
Our exciting new “modern pitching” feature means that pitchers are getting twice the boosts! Not only will we be changing a pitcher’s Fast, Curve, Drop, Stamina, and Speed Difference ratings, we’ll also be boosting the stats for their individual pitches as well, including Pitch Quality. This is a new metric based on pitch value (or pVAL) that gives you an idea as to how good a particular pitchers pitch is overall on a scale from 1 to 100.
In a rotation filled with ace-caliber pitchers, Zac Gallen may have emerged as the Diamondbacks best. In his most recent start, Gallen went 7 IP with 1 ER, 1 BB and 8 K thanks to some masterful change-ups and curveballs. Gallen has now recorded four straight quality starts, each of which have featured fewer than two walks. His batting average against in those four starts? A spotless .209. We’ve boosted Gallen’s Change-up Quality and Movement, Knucklecurve Quality, Drop and Stamina ratings.
It’s no secret that Juan Soto is one of the sports biggest emerging stars. After back-to-back seasons of near .300 averages, Soto has come out swinging in 2020. The Nationals outfielder is slashing .417/.500/.938 through 13 games this year with 7 HR and 16 RBI. Soto is currently in the 99th percentile or higher in exit velocity, expected AVG, expected SLG and expected wOBA. Not bad for a 21-year old. We’ve boosted Soto’s Contact, Power and Speed ratings.
Zack Greinke is zigging while others are zagging and having a blast doing it. The game may be all about velocity but Greinke doesn’t care, he’s averaging about 90 mph on his fastball and dominating with it. He’s also congratulating batters when they don’t swing at pitches (he yelled “nice take” at Rockies infielder Ryan McMahon after he laid off one of his pitches) and calling his own pitches. We’ve boosted Greinke’s Stamina, Fastball Quality, Command and Eephus Pitch Quality ratings.
Arguably no hitter in baseball is seeing the ball better than Anthony Santander right now. Coming into Thursday’s slate of games, the Orioles outfielder had a 14 game hit streak, the longest active streak in baseball. They’re not all just singles either; Santander is slashing .394/.459/1.091 with 6 HR, 5 2B and 10 RBI in the past week alone! He’s also made vast improvements defensively, too. We’ve boosted Santander’s Contact, Power, Arm and Fielding ratings.
While the Los Angeles Dodgers are one of the best offenses in baseball, somebody forgot to tell Marco Gonzales. The Mariners southpaw went 7 IP with 1 ER, 5 H, 0 BB and 9 K’s thanks to a mix of some fantastic change-ups and sinkers. This brings Gonzales’s ERA on the year down to 3.34 and his FIP down to an impressive 3.65. WE’ve boosted Gonzales’s Drop, Sinker Quality and Movement, and Change-up Quality and Movement ratings.
Clint Frazier was recalled from the alternate site this past week and immediately made an impact. Through his first seven games, the Yankees outfielder is slashing .375/.423/.750 with 2 HR and 3 2B. While the sample size isn’t big, early returns on Frazier’s 15% K-rate are really promising. We’ve boosted Frazier’s Contact and Power ratings.
